Both the ASC and MSP suggest that the cloud was quite heavy early on. However, the SDI winds look fine. So probably it was only thick enough to obscure stars on the ASC. The lack of discrete auroral features in the early MSP and ASC record probably indicates that there wasn't any to be seen.
